Paula Barry of Wallace Hill Pottery works in the art of crafting fine pottery. Her beautiful designs have a fluid style. They are at once graceful and organic. While sharing a similar esthetic and Paula's trademark style, each piece is a unique work of art. The decorating techniques used in creating the majority of my work have a fluid style. They are both graceful and relaxing to the viewer. The castles have been a fun addition to the studio, adding a sense of whimsy and childhood imagination. My influences are numerous. Adventures to the sea side, the ripples in the sand were always amazing to me. The intertwining plant growth as well as the leaf and flower buds in a perennial or vegetable garden would hold my attention as I would study the plant. Capturing these random patterns in my work is greatly satisfying. Other influences include, Van Gogh , Dr. Seuss and Walt Disney. As a young girl I would create small doll houses and villages from cardboard boxes. This and fairy tale stories have much influence in the creation of the castles. Both fanciful and imaginative, they are so much fun to look at as well as use. They are thrown on the wheel and carved, with no prior planning, I just begin to work. The techniques used depend on the particular piece. Sgrafitto is a process by which I carve through a colored clay slip, revealing the clay vessel underneath. Altering the pots, either by carving, adding, removing or pressing the clay to get the desired effect. I enjoy working in clay, I am fortunate to do what I love. I hope that when you view my work, you smile as you recall your childhood, the beach or your garden.
